UPI on Credit Cards: The RuPay Revolution and the Reward Fine Print

By Card Manager · 19 Jun 2026 · 4 min read

For a long time, the biggest limitation of credit cards in India was merchant acceptance. While you could use credit cards at large supermarkets, malls, and online portals, the vast majority of India's retail ecosystem—from local kirana shops and tea stalls to street vendors—operates strictly on UPI QR code scans.

That changed with the introduction of UPI linking for RuPay credit cards. You can now link a RuPay credit card to GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, or BHIM and scan any merchant UPI QR code to pay using your credit limit.

It is a revolutionary feature that blends the convenience of UPI with the short-term credit and rewards of credit cards. But behind the hype, there is a lot of fine print regarding how these cards earn rewards. Here is what you need to know.

1. How RuPay UPI Payments Work (and the Merchant Catch)

When you link your RuPay credit card to a UPI app:

  • You can scan any merchant QR code (BharatPe, Paytm, PhonePe, etc.) and choose your credit card as the payment source instead of your bank account.
  • The Catch: You cannot send money to personal UPI IDs (peer-to-peer or P2P transfers). If you scan your friend's QR code to split a dinner bill, or transfer money to a household helper's personal UPI, the transaction will fail. It must be a verified merchant account (P2M).

Furthermore, merchants are not charged Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) fees on UPI transactions under ₹2,000. Because banks make very little money on these small transactions, they are highly incentivized to restrict the rewards they pay out on them.

2. The Reward Fine Print: Caps, Exclusions, and Thresholds

If you expect to earn the same 5% or 2% reward rate on UPI scans that you get on online card swipes, you will be disappointed. Banks use three primary methods to throttle RuPay UPI rewards:

A. The "Base Rate" Downgrade

Many cards offer a high reward rate for transactions on the physical card, but explicitly downgrade the rate for UPI transactions. For example, a card might offer 2% rewards on standard card transactions but drop to 0.5% or 1% when the same card is used via UPI scan.

B. Category Exclusions

Just like standard credit cards, certain merchant categories are frequently excluded from earning UPI rewards.

  • Common Exclusions: Fuel stations, wallet loads, insurance payments, government services, and utility bills.
  • The Kirana Loophole: Sometimes local grocery shops are registered under incorrect Merchant Category Codes (MCCs), causing you to earn zero points even if groceries are technically a rewarded category.

C. Low Monthly Caps

Even if a card offers a generous 1% or 1.5% rewards rate on UPI scans, it often carries a tight monthly cap (e.g., ₹500 or 500 reward points max per month). Once you hit the cap, your earnings drop to zero.

3. Best RuPay Credit Cards for UPI in India

If you want to add a RuPay card to your portfolio, here are the top options currently available:

Card Name UPI Reward Rate Annual Fee Best Used For
Tata Neu Infinity RuPay 1.5% back (as NeuCoins) ₹1,499 (waived at ₹3L) High-spending users, Tata brands (5% back)
Tata Neu Plus RuPay 1% back (as NeuCoins) ₹499 (waived at ₹1L) Mid-range everyday spending
HDFC RuPay Shoppers Stop ~1% value-back Variable Co-branded benefits + steady UPI rewards
Kiwi Axis Bank RuPay Up to 1% cash-back Lifetime Free Low-friction daily scanner built directly into the Kiwi UPI app

4. How to Maximize Your UPI Credit Card Rewards

To get the most out of your RuPay UPI card:

  1. Link it to your favorite app: Link the card inside GPay, PhonePe, or BHIM. Set it as your default payment method for merchant scans.
  2. Scan for transactions above ₹50: Many cards do not award points for transactions under ₹50 or ₹100. Save the credit card for slightly larger spends (like grocery runs or restaurant bills) and use normal bank-UPI for tiny ₹10 chai transactions.
  3. Watch the Caps: Keep track of your monthly spend. If you reach your card's monthly UPI reward cap, switch back to regular bank-UPI or a different card to avoid losing out on potential yields.
